THE OVERLAND MAIL TO THE NORTH.

'.; • ' TO THE EDITOR. iSIS, —Allow me through your columns to draw; attention to the- manner in which the above service is being carried but. Foraeveral years back oar overland mail has been; except on very rare . occasions, dolivered at our post-office punctually at one o'clock p.m., every Monday. Now, it seems very surprising to many of J us

that, after all-our boasted improvement in road-making, and the great alleged discovery of a short road to the North, via ] Manngaturoto, we are now unable to ( get our mail delivered till -some time on Tuesday. The conclusion we must arrive at 'is that, either the mail is carried at a greater « "snail's pace" than formerly, or that the 1 short road through Maungaturoto is a great j deal longer than the old route throngh j Mangawai, Breamtail, and Waipu. I am , told that in this affair, as in many others, the blame is shifted over to " the 1 other ma " —that is to say, the Waipu mail- i carrier accounts for his own want of punc- i tuality, by saying that the mail arrives in ( Maungaturoto too late for him to bp back to . Waipu in time on Monday, and I expect our friend at Maungaturoto can shift the blame ' over to somebody else. However, what we want is t» get our Weekly News and letters on Monday, evening as usual. Men are receiving good pay for doing the work, and they should, if possible, be compelled to do it.—Yours, &c, Pcnctual.
