The Coromandel Steamboat Company s new steamer Coromondel arrived in harbour yesterday afternoon from the Thames, via Coromandel. She left the goods wharf, Grahamstown, at 8.15 a.m., and reached Coromandal in two hours and three-quarters against tide under easy steam. Some excitement was caused at Coromandel on the arrival of the new steamer, and nearly the whole township turned out to inspect her, shareholders and townsfolk being alike well pleased with her appearance and the accommodation afforded. Not having received her certificate from the Government Inspector, she was not allowed to take passengers, otherwise she could have been crowded by people anxious to patronise the new local boat, but several of the shareholders by virtue of their right of ownership, came up by her, three hearty cheers being given from the wharf on her casting off, which was returned by those on board. A pleasant passage of three hours and fifty-four minutes brought her to Auckland. When abreast of the North Head, the a.s. Rose Casey I was from two to three lengths ahead of the new steamer, but was overhauled and passed by the Coromandel before reaching H.M.S. Emerald. The steamer will swing to adjust compasses today, and will at once commence her career in the Auckland and Coroaiandel trade. Captain Eraund takes command, and Mr. Cox, late of the B.a. Kotomahana, as chief officer. The measured mile will probably be run this afterMessrs. A. and G. Price, of Grahamstown, having finished with the steamer Coromandel, j yesterday had the new s.s. Kopuru brought round from Shortland to the goods wharf, to take in her machinery, and every despatch will be used to get her ready for sea. H.JL s. Emerald will proceed to Wellington the day after the arrival of the mail steamer from San Francisco. This will probably bo on the 2nd, and the war-ship will consequently sail on the 3rd. Suicide at Sea.—Commander Gaude, of the troopship Le Calvados, committed suicide while that vessel was en route to New Caledonia. The circumstances of the case are very sad. The vessel arrived in Hobson's Bay lato on June 15, and the facts of the incident were not known till late on Monday afternoon. It transpires that when the vessel was in the Red Sea, the commander suffered severely from a sunstroke. For over twenty days and nights he was without sleep, and hid to be carefully watched. Having a. large numbor of souls on board, he became much depressed, and seemed to labour under the hallucination that ho must destroy himself, and consequently the officers on board were very guarded Tfcith him. However, about 2 p.m. on the 12th May, he left the deck, and proceeding to hia cabin at the end of the saloon, took a revolver, and destroyed himself. His body has been encased in an inner coflin of tin, filled 'With spirit, and it is intended that

after the vessel has reached New Caledonia it shall be forwarded to France, whero deceasei leaves s>. wife and two children. The doceasec was in very affluent circumstances, and greal sorrow was experienced on board at tboir com mander's sudden and entirely unexpected death Intelligence of the catastrophe has been tele graphed to deceased relatives in France. Lieu tenant Simon, who had been specially choset by Commander Gaudo as chief officer, is nov in charge of the Le Calvados. — Melboimu Lender.
