POLICE COURT.— MONDAY.

[Before B. C. Bars tow, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness.—Four persons were fined for this offence. Assaulting the Police.—John Cunningham was charged with being drank, also with damaging one tunic, the property of Sergeant Fleming. Prisoner pleaded guilty. For the first offence he was fined 10s and costs ; and for the second, was fined 5s and coats. Damaging PiiOPEKTiT. —Margaret Keane was charged with being drunk, also with breaking a pane of glass the property of E. H. Percy, of Albert-street. Prisoner pleaded not guilty to the second charge. E. H. Percy proved the charge, and she was fined 5s and costs. Four Young Thieves. —Frank Whorskey, James Whorskey, George Evans, aud John Berry, were charged with stealing Bix dozen beer bottles, the property of Henry Neumegen. All four of the boys pleaded guilty. They were also charged with stealing six dozen bottles, the property of John Colquhoun. They also pleaded guilty to this charge. Mr. Pardy stated that the boys took the bottles from the back-yard. His Worship sentenced Frank Whorskey to fourteen days' imprisonment for each offence, and once to be flogged, as be had already been in gaol for a similar offence ; James Whorskey was ordered to the Industrial Home for three years ; and the other two were ordered to prison for twenty-four hours, and to be afterwards flogged by their parents. Rogue and Vagabond.—John Pepper, on remand, was charged with a breach of the Vagrant Act, by being a rogue and vagabond, &.c. Prisoner pleaded not guilty. Detective Jeffrey deposed that he had known prisoner for several years as one of the worst characters in Auckland. He obtained his food by begging. He slept in stables and open sheJs. Sergeant-Major Mason deposed that prisoner was well known to the policc. Prisoner said he was a hard-working man. His Worship said he was sorry to say there were several other convictions against the prisoner. He would discharge the prisoner on condition that he left the town at once. Prisoner promised to do so. Stealing Female Apparel.—George E. Harris was charged with stealing a lady's dress, worth 20s, the property of Alexander McGregor. Mr. Pardy stated that prisoner was working on board the liowena. Siuce his engagement on board, wholesale robberies had taken place. Through information received, Detective Jeffrey made inquiries, and traced the dress to prisoner. He asked his Worship to remand the case till Monday next. Mr. Laishley appeared for the prisoner, and asked that he might be allowed bail. His Worship declined, as the prisoner mighc throw obstacles in the way of the police in detecting other robbenes. The remand was granted. Stealing a Sovereign.—Alfred Philcox, on remand, was charged with stealing a sovereign, the property of Edward Colquhoun. On the application of Mr. Laishley, the case was remanded for a day. Refusal to Pay Tolls. —A charge against Richard Ash, for refusing to pay (id for toll to Kdward Faulkner, was, on the application of the plaintiff, withdrawn. CniRGKOF Embezzlement (Withdrawn). —The charge against A. N. Ogilvie, for embezzling certain sums of money, the property of the Kawakawa Co-operative Society, was, on the opplication of Mr. Pardy, withdrawn. He stated that since inquiries had been made, he found the evideuce insufficient, and it would be useless to take up the time of the Court. Mr. Cooper, for the prisoner, addressed the Court, shewing the inconvenience Mr. Ogilvie had been put to, besides having a criminal charge hanging over his head for a fortnight. His Worship dismissed the case.
