MEETINGS AND AMUSEMENTS.

The annual meeting of the Moanataia?i Gold Mining Company was heid on the 30th May. The report shewed that 7942 tons of quartz had yielded 46770z5. of gold, and that tributers had crushed 2981 tons of quartz, yielding 52390z5. gold, of which the company recnived 20} per cent, ilesera. Stone and J. McCosh Clark were elected directors.

An entertainment was given on I2th June, in the Temperance Hall, in aid of the Temperance Hall Fund. Hia Worship the Mayor took the chair at 8 o'clook, and stated that in taking the chair it was not his intention to detain them by making any remarks, especially as there was anch a long programme. He then introduced the first song, which was " Old Sootland, I Love Thee." Mr. John Blaokman delivered a moat appropriate lecture on the life of Burns the poet. Several songs, duets, and trios were given d uring the entertainment, and a pleasant evening was enjoyed. An interesting lectnre by the Rev. Thomas Buddie, was delivered on Friday evening, the 6th of June, in the leoture rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association. The subject was entitled, '.' Maori Kingism and the Recent Kopua Meeting." The lecturer repeated his account of hie visit to Kopua, an account of which wa» reported in the Herald ou tho 14th of May. His interpretation of the faots of the great Kopua meeting is jnet now important.. Hβ shews that Maori Kingism is in rapid prooeea of dissolution. Colonel Hauliain presided. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the leoturer.

After te? the chair was taken by Mr. Dorrington, who stated that the chair was to have been occupied by Mr. Goldie, bat that gentleman was not able to come. The programme was a long one, consisting of songs, glees, recitations, &c, by the young members of the institution. A meeting of the members of the Wealeyan Methodist Temperance Society was held in Pitt-street school-room on Monday evening, June 16, —the Rev. W. Morley in the chair. After devotional exercise?, the., following committed were elected :—Messrs. Thos. Buddie, J. McMaeter, R. M. Wallis, John Rose, R. Jessop, Chas. Laver, J. N. Newbold, C. Hooker, A. Lay burn, J. Caradus, W. Hansen, and another. The rev. chairman delivered an address on " Personal Effort," bearing on the temperance question. Messrs. W. Hansen and James Caradus also addressed the large audience, after which the meeting closed.

Oα Tuesday, the 10th June, the scholars attending the Maketu Catholic school, Great South Road, were examined by the Very Rev. Dr. McDonald, assisted by Messrs. Theophilus Pratt and Lawrence Callaghan. Many of the parents and friends of the pupils were also present. More than fifty children presented themselves for examination. The day was exceedingly fine, and the school-ground covered with evergreen shrubs appeared a pleasing feature in the day's proceedings. The subscribers to the fund raised for the benefit of Mrs. Moller, widow of the lata Captain Moller, murdered at Butaritari, and her children, had a meeting on June 20, for the purpose of determining as to the manner in which the fund should be appropriated. Messrs. Larkins and Rattray were appointed trustees. The amount is £91 15s 2d. It was resolved that £1 a-week should be paid to Mrs. Moller while she has charge of the children, until the fund is exhausted. It is computed that by placing the amount in the Savings Bank, the accruing interest will raise the amount to £100. This will be £1 a-week for the widow and children extending over a period of nearly two years.
