The Government, to clear up the state o£ thti j|| law respecting the jurisdiction over the ilS'i Islands of the Pacific, have issued the fol- : tS ' lowing notice to masters of vessels trading 'M \ to the islands in the Western Pacific M •"] Ocean:— ' I I Marine Department, '& 1 "Wellington 15th May, 1879. ?? \ The attention of masters of vessels atid other .'I J persons trading toislandsin the Western Paoifie 'I* i Ocean is directed to Her Majesty's Ord»r-in- ,£■} ■ Council, dated 13th August, 1877, known as j " Tho Western Pacific Or«ler-in-Oouncil, of l P (i 1877," which constitutes a Court haying lit ;] criminal and civil jurisdiction over the following frj j islands and places : — .*■< (1.) The groups of islands known as the ! M * Friendly Islands, the Navigators Islands, the =?s■? Union Islands, the Phoenix Islands, the Ellice 'Si i Islands, the Gilbert Islands, the Marshall %i \ Islands or Archipelago, the Caroline Islands, the '0 4 Soloiron Islands, the Santa Cruz Island*, S J (2.) The Island of Rotumah. |||4 (3.) The part of the island of New Guinea p| ° eastward of the 143 rd meridian of longitude. (4.) The Islands or Archipelago of New .iMP Britain and New Ireland. "'S^N (5.) The Louisiade Archipelago. K§ (6.) All ether islands in the Western Pacific |8| Ocean not being within the limits of the colonies >m 1 of Fiji, Queensland, and New South Wales, and M £ not being within the jurisdiction of any civilized § "^ (7.)
