GOVERNMENT NATIVE SCHOOL. ALLEGED INTERFERENCE BY TAWHIAO.
A correspondent, who is a Government teacher, writes from the Whangarei district, as follows:—"A respectable-looking native came to me a %veek or two sioce, enquiring the school charge for two young Maori boyß. I said, 'The charge is nothing,' and he replied, 'That is cheap.' The next day he brought them, and with them a couple of slates. He desired me to supply them with books, &c, necessary. They came regularly for a few days, and were very attentive and desirous of learning; but after that, were absent. On enquiry of their parent or guardian, I 'was told that one of their tribe—a chief who had just returned from a visit to the kiDg country—had brought word from Tawhiao that no Maori children were to be sent to the pakeha schools, and on pressing him for the reason why, he said that the affair at Taranaki was the cause."
