Chancellor and Sinking Fund speedily went to tbe front, and made the pace till, as they passed the stand, they had a lead of a clear length of Laertes, who was half-a-length in front of Venus Transit and Foul Play, while Templeton and Cloth of Gold were six lengths behind. At thriequarters of a mile Sinking Fund took the lead for a few strides, but Chancellor collared him again, and they went on side by side. Foal Play at the same time passed Venus Transit and got level with Laertes, a length separating this pair from the leaders, Tenpletoa and Cloth of Gold still in the background. A quarter of a-mile from home, Foul Play was let out, and rapidly leaving Laertes, ha turned iuto the straight on terms with Chancellor and Sinking Fund, on the latter of whom Allen soon had the whip. Ray, seeing that the favourite was in difficulties, now called on Templeton, and the old horse, answering with the greatest gameness, passed successively Venus Transit, Chancellor, and Sinking Fund, but could never quite get up to Foul Play, who won with a little in hand by a length. Just before entering the straight, three leaders abreast, and Vampire a!s> coming up, a grand struggle home ensued, but, amidst great excitement, Chancellor was seen holding his own, aud although Foul Play and Vampire came with a rush, they could not pass hitn, and the Otago horse won by quite a length from Foul Play, who was only a neck in front of Vampire; Maritana was fourth.
