OTAMATEA ANNUAL RACES.

1 These races were held at Batley, on the 12fch of February, and having been looked forward to for some time, attracted a L fair attendance from the surrounding districts. Everything passed off satisfactorily, without a dispute of any kind. The first > race of the day was Handicap Hurdle Race, of 20aovs. Mr. Rye's Tom Finn, aged, list. 7lbs. (D. Munn) 1 L Air. Hopkins's b g Buccaneer, aged, Osfc. 21bs. < (Hopkins) ... ... ... ... ... 2 This race was entirely spoiled by Buccaneer bolting round the first hurdle and throwing ' hi 3 rider, which left it a walk-over for Tom Finn. Mr. Smeaton's Deceiver was ' scratched. Batley Cup, of 25sovs., weight for age. Mr. Sraeaton's b g Deceiver, aged (F. North) 1 Mr. Rye's g g Warrior, aged (D. Munn) ... 2 Mr. Hull's b m Belle of the Isles, aged (Mooney) ... ... ... ... ... 3 This race was a gift to Deceiver, although carrying 141b?. over. Settlers' Race Handicap, of 15sovs. Mr. Rye's b m Thorn, 4yrs., Sst. 31bs. (D. Munn) ... ... ... ... ... ... 1 : Mr. Linnell's ch g Chanticleer, aged, 9st. (Williams) . ... 2 Although this promised to be a good race, seven having entered, it turned out another fiasco like the hurdles, two only coming to the po3t. Chanticleer belted at the first turn. Maori Race, of £7 10a. Niho 1 Eramihia ... ... ... ... ... ... 2 Otamatea Handicap, of 40sovs. Mr. Smeaton's b g Deceiver, Sst. lOlbs., carried lOst. Slbs. (F. (Nathan) 0 This was the big race of the day, and although Deceiver was carrying 26lbs. over- ; weight, he again proved too much for the local horses by winning as he liked. Tom Finn, from whom so much was expected, did nothing, as he seemed to be worn out. Pony Race, of ssors. Mr. Hela's Guy Fiwkes 1 Native's Blacksmith 2 Six started, and it was u complete boil over, as Blacksmith was expected to win as he liked. Consolation Race, of £7 10s. Air.
