COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Oiiice, Saturday afternoon. The Customs receipts to-day were £SSS 18j lOd. The following are the amount of duties collected by the Customs at the Port of Auckland for the weuk ending Febrary 1, IS7O £2270 13s Sd. The P.M. s.s. City of Sydney arrived in harbour on the 15th ult. (contract date), from San Fraucisco and Honolulu, She brought London dates of December sth, and Californian to the 23rd. The arrivals of English vessels have been the barque James Wi3harfc, on the 12th ult., with a cargo valued at £35.000, and the ship Maraval, value £27,100. Several Island trader.* have also arrived, each a full vessel with copra, shell, cotton, &c., and the owners thereof have reason to feel satisfied at the result of their vessel's ctuise. The season, however, for Island trading is now past, until a few months heuce, consequently smaller vessels are on the berth, but the footing which one or two of our mercantile houses have secured bids fair to be turned hereafter to profitable accouut. The English arrivals have brought an assortment of merchandise that will be long before it Anils an outlet here. We have, on several occasions, stated that the market is glutted with all descriptions of imported goods, and on every hand the cry is to the same effect. The saiuo complaint ia current in the South, the market there being in the same condition as our own, and to effect busiuess in lines of imported goods, it has to bo done at a rate that leaves no margin of profit to merchants. Business duriug the month can hardly be said to have resumed its usual dimensions —the holidays sadly interfering with trade prospects; but now that the festive season has goue by, we expect to see, in the course of a few days, an improved demand for all classes of goods. Considerable interest has been taken in the money market, and although there is iess disposition to invest appareut, yet thero is abundant capital at command, at a rather higher rate than those recently ruling for investments of a first-class character. There are two reasons assigued for this tightness in money, the uneasy feeling prevalent with regard to the depreciation of landed property in the South, and the effect of the English failures upon several Southern houses. Also the floating of the new shares of the Bank of New Zealand and the Union Sash and Door Company, each of which, in the preseut state of money market, makes it iucumbent upon the old shareholders to tako them up. .Notwithstanding this, we do hear of auy real ! depreciation in the value of property here, though there is less disposition to purchase, and fewer land transactions have taken place or are in negotiation than were current a few months ago. Local industries are gradually forging ahead, and the profitableness of these undertakings is apparent from the interesting balaucosheets that have been presented to the shareholders, while indirectly they circulate large sums of money among the labouring classes, that would otherwise be sent out of the country. Tho Auckland Oil Company held its annual meeting on the 21st, and declared a dividend of 10a per share, or per cent, upon the oaid-up capital. The Union Sash and Door Company, on Friday last, met the shareholders with a most interesting balance-sheet, which shews a not profit for the half-year ending December 31st of £9827, which enabled the directors to declare a dividend at the rate of 20 per cent, per annum, and carry forward a balanse of over £4000. The timber industry, of

which the foregoing company st.inds out preeminently as its head, is attaining to large proportions, and will, in tho future, bo a source of wealth to the city and district. At present the supply is beyond the demand, yet it is estimated there are fully 50 millions of feet in ' the creeks, a quantity of logs uuequalled iu the history of the trade. The continued drought is 1 causing serious inconvenience and impeding large operations. Among the saw-mill i proprietors, however, there is coulidence that the drought will soon cease, aud in the natural order of things the mills will then be amply supplied, and a reduction iu the price of timber set in, and give an impetus to the initiation of large and important buildings, operations that are at present kept in the background on the above account. Kauri gum has undergone little or no alteration iu value during the month, the receipts beiug light in consequence of the 44 diggers" being in the city, holiday-making. Ordinary scraped commands from £33 to £35 per ton, while first-class grades have realised vory hitfh ratoa. Before our next tho shij>.-* Loch Fleet and May Queen will have sailed, and will carry about 500 tons between them. Gold mining, which for several months has been at a low ebb, with the now year • seems to have taken a fresh start, and new developments have taken iu j the Kuranui, Moanataiari t Alburnia, aud others, i which at the present moment give promise of infusing fresh life into the goldfields. 1 The stoppage of the Pumping Association works 1 at the Thames, which for many years has 5 drained the lowest levels of numerous mines, 1 will cause for a little time serious inconveni--1 ence, but we are glad to hear there is a pro--1 spect of the pumps being started agaiu. We do not look upon the stoppage of the pumps 1 as an unmitigated eTil, but, on the contrary, ic - will be found that It will be the means of rich i mines being discovered beyond the small area of ground that, up to the present time, has s been fairly and honestly worked. Breadstuffs 1 have declined in value, in consequence of . large stocks of Southern importations which aro being forced on the market, at ■- values from £'J to £10 10s. Local millers 1 are asking for superfine £12 and £11, subject to trade discount. In the face of this r gradual declension in value, the price of local 1 wheat has advanced, and good samples are commanding 4s 9d to ss. The wheat crop has been e good, and it is estimated that the average proj duction would be about 25 bushels per acre, r The introduction of the new harvesting machines solved what at one time appeared to , be a difficult question—that of labour, as the extended area sown would, under the old sys- } tem, have required labour beyond our present , supply. Oats have also eased in price, and 4s I Od to 4s 7d for Southern growth is about the quotation for lines. Maize continues scarce, and the market is bare, both of local and • Fijian. Malting barley is scarce, and good samples command extreme rates. A line of American has been placed at 6s. Feed : A • large line of 2500 bushels has been offered at 4s. Colonial malfc is worth 10s Od, at which a parcel to arrive has been placed. Hops : Several parcels of colonial, 1878, have been quitted at Is; Bavarian, Is 8d; and English new, by steamer, Is Sd. Groceries are fully stocked, and a large trade sale recently took placo, but prices realized were anything but satisfactory. Candles are so heavy in stock that it is difficult to effect a sale, and, although holders are asking for Price's Belmonts lOd, and Brandon's Nevas 9d, yet, we believe, a shade under these figures would be accepted. Sugars : The arrivals, ex Hero and Tararua, viz., 9000 packages, came to a bare market, and these will speedily go into consumption. 5000 mats of Fijian bright yellow crystals also come to a good market, and, when these are offered in a few days, should realise satisfactory prices. Tea has arrived in I moderate quantity, the foregoing steamers bringing forward about 2000 packages. A good business has been done in line sorts, and the general run, now that the duty ia reduced, | will, in all probability, bo upon finer grades. Galvanised iron is overstocked, and it is com- | puted that there is about 500 tons in stock of various brands, offering at £23 to £25 per ton; Gospel Oak, at £25 15s to £26. Fencing-wire is in the same cate- • gory, and is offered at from £12 10s and upwards. Beers have met with a fair demand, but there is a large stock of ordinary in the market, but prime brands, such as Bull Dog (Head's bottling) meet with ready sale, and are inadequate r to the demand. Brandies of second qualities J are fully supplied, Hennessy's only moderate, with a hardening tendency, holders asking 3is to 34s 6d, but a large line was recently placed at 32s 6d. Clarets and Australian wines have been largely consumed during tho holidays, and the reduction of duty upon the latter indicates that henceforward it will displace the heavier European wines. The market remains in the same position as last month. With regard to paint oils and kerosene, on hand there is a sufficient stock to meet the requirements for many months to come. Vestas are over-supplied for the next six months and it is difficult to quit a line at remunerative prices, and several large parcels have been shipped to other markets.

There has been a muoh better market for mining shares, but the stopP a ?e the large pump has checked all Bpeoulation in these stooks, and there are very few buyers, and only at nominal prices.
