SWAGE ASSAULT ON A WIFE IN MELBOUENE.
Aboot 11 o'clock one evening recently, a woman named O'Brien, residing in a right-of-way off Govcutry-streot, Emerald Hill, c;illed at t'ie local police station, and reported that she had ba »n brutually assaulted by her hu.-baud, 'Jh irles O'Brien. On being eximined by Sergeant Bailey, ono of the woman's ears was found to have be n bitten i.ff, and there were several severe brnises on the side of her head. Two constables were • immediately d-sp itched to look fortUo man, ; but by this time he had managed to get out i of the house, and hide himself. Se geant ' Routledgo then proceeded to O'Brien's I house, and when i a right of-way near ! tho Mile end Hotel, the ruffian, who was i hiding under the fence, sprang out and ) attempted to stab the sergeant in the breivst, ■ but, fortunately, the knife, having no point, ; did not penetrate the sergeant's clothing, i although the force of the blow nearly i knocked him down. A struggle then took place bftM'e»n them, and the fellow was I secured, and taken to the lock-up. lb sub--1 sequently transpired that the prisoner had hoen ill-using hia wife to such au extent that e during the day she was obliged to apply for r a summons This appears to have aggrau vated the ruffian, who wa; not content with t striking and kicking her, but afterward dist figured her for lire, only a small portion of t the upper p irt of the ear being left. During e the whole time the polica were engaged in , arresting the fellow, Mrs. O'Brien was suffer- , ing most excruciating pain, and had to be e subsequently removed for surgical aid.
