HAKARU.
Ox Saturday, tho 14th instant, the monthly Court was held in the Court-house in this district, before Messrs. John Ryan and Charles Haselden, J.P.'s, when there were five cases of tresspass, &c., disposed of.
The great excitement caused by the contest for County Councillors has now subsided. We quite vied with our Manga<vai friends in the numbers and excitement re the candidates, between forty and fifty ratepayers putting in au appearance at both polling places, clearly proving the increasing popularity of the Councils and tho growing confidence felt in them, now that they are being understood.
The Bishop of Auckland preached on the 3 m rd December ill the chapel at To Arai a most impressive and excellent discourse, which was listened to with marked attention by a large congregation. The vocal portion of the service was ably conducted by Mr. T. Eyre, supported by other members of the district, the whole service vividly carrying back the minds of many present to tho oft-heard services in the time-honoured churches of old England.
This district is sadly lacking raiu, but all the cattle and crops are in excelleut condition. An enormous yield of fruit is expected from the various orchards aud viucyards in this district.
I am happy to be able to report the steady progress of this favoured locality, and the advent of several new changca are confidently spoken of, which must materially assist in the development of the district. Not the least is that the worthy councillor for Mangawai is rapidly and energetically moving for the ercetion of a wharf there and the introduction of a steamer, and we leave the matter, with the utmost confidence, in his hands.—[A Correspondent.]
