AUCKLAND TIMBER COMPANY.
We have, on a previous occasion, referred to the enterprise of the above company, as shewn in the erection, of the largo mill on the westward aide of the Dock upon the reclaimed land. It is evident that the work has been pushed a-head with the utmost vigour, a3 we observe that the second half of the building is in a very forward state, and Mr. Priestley, who is in charge of ths works, informs us that ho expects to have the roof on by the end of the year. The building when completed will be very commodious, being 100 feet by 160 feet, with three floors, the whole being supported on pillars, which obviates the obstructions usually seen in saw-mills. This largo building will be tilled with wood-working machinery of tha most modern and improved deicription, and tlie whole be driven by a pair of powerful engines, specially adapted for the work. Already a small portion of the machinery has been got to work, consisting of a breakingdnwn saw, two circulars, a deal frame, aud planing machines. These are driven by two small temporary engines, which, although too small to drive tho whole, are, nevertheless, capable of giving the company's other mills great assistance. We are informed by the manager, Mr. Holdship, that with the present appliances they can cut up 70,000 feet of logs per week, which at this dry season, when tho country mills are short of logs, is a great advantage. When the works are completed, they will be a credit to the ci*-y, aud do much to maintaiu the prestige of Auckland as the chief centre of the timber trade, and the important branch of the manufacture of doors, sashes, mouldings, &c., to whiih the company will devote great attention.
