POVERTY BAY.

[from an occasional correspondent.] In matters political we are very quiet. We have had lately several accessions to our population, and the town is filling up. One or two new business establishments have started. Two young men from Napier have taken the premises adjoining the Standard office and started as auctioneers, &c. They had one sale, and have advertised another for to-day. Mr. Brown, (" Snyder,") has also gone into business on his own account, bis connection with th« newspaper having terminated. We have had several days of steady rain, and the country is locking well after the long drought—the pasture round about Waeringa aud Hika is marvellous. Our Government school, under the able management of Mr. Maberly and his assistants, is progressing, and great satisfaction is given. The Rev. Mr. Root, Presbyterian, after an absence of eight weeks, has returned from Greymouth. There was an ordination of elders, by the Rev. D. Bruce, in his church last week, and I hear that steps have been taken towards at once enlarging it. He being a consistent and good man and also an excellent preacher, it is found that owing to the numbers who cannot obtain seats, it is absolutely necessary to provide extra accommodation. The other Church (of England) seems languishing. The Rev. Father Reiganin (R.C.) held • a service here last Sunday, in the school-room. There are a great many of that persuasion here, but singularly they have no resident priest.
