VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

RIFLE MATCH. The rifle match which came off on Saturday afternoon for the Ladies' Prize of the Victoria Company it appears was not taken part in by all the intending competitors, and four therefore who did nut fire on that occasion did so at six o'clock yesterday morning. Volunteer Bowden was the highest scorer on Saturday, and was generally looked upon as the wiuner, but Voluutccr James Leigh, one of the four marksmen alluded to, has beaten Bow-den by four points, and accordingly secures the trophy. The following are the scores . * ame - J-.R v.R >••(« y.l*. y.t». n " Volunteer J. Leigh . 10 9 I*2 9 10 50 Volunteer T. W. It seems that some dissatisfaction exists respecting the result of the firiug, and mainly from the fact that there was no officer in charge of the firing party yesterday morning—the scores being taken by one of the competitors. ENGINEER CADETS. The monthly inspection parade of the Engineer Cadets was held yesterday evening in the Drill-shed—3s rank and file being preseut under the command of Captain White. Sergeant-Major Haslem, in tho absence of Major Lusk, was the inspecting officer. PROPOSED RIFLE COMPETITION. I A meeting of the Victoria Company took place last evening in the Drill shed, for the 1 purpose of considering a challenge to a rifle match with the Thames Scottish Volunteers. Captain Derromoccupied the chair, aud briefly stated the matter for the settlement of which he had convened the meeting. He had received, as captain of the Company, a challenge from the Thames Scottish, who were anxious to come up to Auckland, and tire the contest on the 29th inst. They also desired to fire for an amount of money a side, to be determined on. After considerable discussion, it was decided that Captain Derrom should reply to the tilect that the representatives of the Victoria Company w»-re quite willing to accept the challenge, but that they could nos lire on the 29th, they would, however, shoot on any day afterwards, but objected to tiring for money. This terminated the business, and' the meeting dissolved.
