PROVINCIAL SCHOLARSHIPS.
, The Examination for District and Open Scholarships for 1577 commenced yesterday I morning, at the new City East School Build- | ings in Wellesley-street, and will continue till l Wednesday. There are ten scholarships to be competed for, entitling the holder of each to an allowance of £36 a year and free tuition at the Grammar School. The competition for seven of these is limited to the pupils of the District or Common Schools. 'I heremaiuing three are open all comers, and are tenable until the holder is IS years of age. The subjects of examination for the pupils of the Common Schools are English Lauguage, Arithmetic, Geography, History, Primary Laws of Health," Writing, and Heading: for the Open Scholarships—Latin (JEneid sth, Gfch, Ciesar, Gallic War, translation of English into Latin), Arithmetic, Algebra. Euclid, English History, Grecian History, Geography, English Language anrt Literature. The above subjects are compulsory, and to these arc added the following, which are optional—Trigonometry and Mensuration, French, Botany, Chemistry. The examination is being conducted by the luspectorof Schools, assisted by Mr. Wortuington, of City East School. The number of candidates from the various schools is as follow:—
For the Open Scholarships.—From Auckland Grammar School, 7; Parnell Church of England Grammar School, I : total, S.
For the District Scholarships.—From Auckland City East, 24; Auckland City West (No. 1), :2 ; Auckland City West (No. 2), 1 ; Newton East, 4 ; Dcvonport, 3 ; Onehunga, G ; Otara, 1 ; Paparoa, 2 ; Whan, 1 ; Aratapu. 1 ; Mount Hobson, 2 ; Maioro, 1; Driving Creek, 2; Tauranga, 1 : total, 51.
During the day the rooms were visited by the chairman and several members of the Board of Education, each of whom expressed great pleasure that one district at least of this city had at last obtained commodious school premises. * *
The examination for Scholarships at the Thames, where there are nine candidates, is being conductcd by Mr. Durrien.
In addition to the candidates for the Scholarships th*»re are 20 for certificates of proficiency. These latter are principally girls:—From Newton East, 4 ; Auckland West (No. 1), 3 ; Auckland West (No. 2), 1 ; Mauku, 1 ; 1 ; Ponsonby, 1 ; Devonport, 1 ; Mr 3. Shayle George (private), 1 ; Thames schools, 7.
