THE REGISTRATION AND RETURNING OFFICER FOR MONGONUI AND THE BAY OF ISLANDS.

It trill be in the recollection of our readers that during last session a memorial was presented to the House o£ Representatives from. Mr. John. Lundon, against Mr. Williams, the Registration and Returning Officer for the Bay and Mongonui, on the subject of improprieties, committed by that officer in connection with his official duties, and that ths same was considered and reported upon by the Public Petitions Committee, and a recommendation made that as the allegations were of a serious character,, the Government should appoint a commission to make * report into the truth or otherwise of the allegations, contained in thfl memorial.. The committee also recommend that ths Commissioners should not in any way be connected with the Civil Service. Mr. London, ■we learn, has written to the Hon. Mr. Whitaker, the Attorney-General and Resident Minister at Auckland, respectfully asking that a person may be appointed, -with a view of having an investigation into the charges preferred against Mr. Williams, and as the recommendation comes from the delegates of the House specially appointed to consider the matter of grievances, we presume the necessary action will be taken, ana ■ an enquiry sanctioned.
