THE SALMON HATCHING EXPERIMENT.

The salmon, hatching process in the Domain, is progressing most satisfactorily, and will, undoubtedly, turn out a complete success. From all the localities to which the salmon ova recently imported from California has ■ been sent, the most favourable reports of the. hatching have been received, and hopes are \ now entertained that the acclimatisation of the Californian salmon in this province will be attended with greater success than any similar experiment that has been tried in Australasia. In all probability arrangements will soon be made by the respective Australian and New Zealand Acclimatisation Societies for further importations of salmon ova from San Francisco, wherewith to stock the principal rivers with " the king of fish." The Auckland Acclimatisation Society have, we understand, wisely resolved to confine the acclimatisation of the salmon to rivers within a radius of thirty or forty miles from Auckland, so aa to keep the supply of salmon as much as possible within easy access of the largest centres of population, including the city of Auckland and Grahamstown. In process of time the Society will be glad to extend the acclimatisation of salmon to the more isolated streams of the province.
