ARATAPU.

The children attending our district school underwent the most searching examination, conducted by Mr. Calvert (a neighbouring teacher) and our own teacher (Mr. .John Chilinan). The teat was a very lengthy one, laating three days of six hours each— namely, Wednesday Thursday, and Friday, from 9.30 a.m. till 6 p.m. The children were examined in* the following subjects :— Heading, spelling, writing, geography, history, transcribing, composition, object lessons, grammar, dictation, and recitation, and the manner in which the pupils acquitted themselves confers great credit on their painstaking and energetic teacher, Mr. Chilman. The examination was carried on orally and by by papers—the junior division being orally examined, and the senior division having test papers of questions on the various subjects placed before them. The following are the successful competitors :— Fourth form: Reading, Master W. Jeffery, Mins Eliz. M. Stehr; writing, Master W. Jeffery, Miss Eliz. Harden; arithmetic, Master J. Harden, Mise M. W. In addition to the result of above test, Mr. Chilinan had also everyday siucehehadhadcharge of the school, J awarded marks to every pupil for punctuality in attendance, cleanliness, and neat- ' ness in dress, good conduct and general dej meanour, and general application with their studies. The following are the boys and girls who have thus received the greatest quantity of marks in each form : —Fourth form : Joseph Harden, Elizabeth M. Stehr. 'i hird form : William Wrigley, Frances E. Hartley. Second form : John Mitchell, Margaret Brown. First form: Frederick Jeffery, Jeanie Brown. The various prizes, to the number of fifty, will be presented to the winners, publicly, on Saturday afternoon, when a substantial feast will also be prepared for all the children, together with ■ their parents and friends. The examination was on each day enlivened by several songs, sung by the children; and on the whole, there is a very marked improvement noticeable in the abilities of the children, and discipline of the school, which was highly gratifying to all who were present.—[Correspondent.]
