POVERTY BAY.
Once again the Pretty Jane has come to grief here, and once again she, has got off, Eortuuately the weather was mild while she was in difficulties.
There is some little excitement to-day amongst the natives. They say that Mr. Resd has caused a mob of cattle to be driven on to a porfciou of land they held as a reserve, and that, as they opposed such a trespass, they wre met by force, their gates chopped down with axes, and one of xheir women's hands severely hurt Such an assault would probably have to be put up with, as if the case were brought here the question of title of land would probably be raised, and the jurisdiction of the U.M. Court ousted. You have probably heard that a Royal Commission will sit here at the end of thie week to make enquiries regarding Mr. Commissioner VVilson's report. I have heard most flattering accounts of the ability and high standing of the Commissioners, who are unknown to the majority of the settlers here. It is to be hoped that they will make a decisive report. It is very clear that some one has been very wrong. Now, we want to know, who that some one is.
. Judge llogan seems to have fallen much in the estimation of his friends in consequence of his behaviour towards his benefactor, Sir D: McLean.
There is now on exhibition at one of the hotels here, a wonderful live rana lamb with six legs; I shall be glad to treat for the purchase of same for Host Perkins if he likes, and will -aend cheque in advance.
