SPORTING.

The latest betting on the Y.B.C. Cup and Derby are below. For the former Feu d'Artifice occupies the premier place in the list, with Irish Stew: second, and Valentia third.' It will be thusi seen that Irish Stew is not so strong a! 'favourite as he was, but still maintains a good i position. For the Derby, Tocal, by Barb, is level with Newminster, and in this case; Tocal must be improving, or Newminster not; recoveringrso rapidly l from his recent "dos-: ing" as we were led to believe. Ne wmmster, ; according to the late papers which contained: ''Augur's," "Nemo's,"and "Beacon's"tips, which we published yesterday, was looked upon as a dead certainty for the Cup. Tocal; is a splendid animal, the property of Sir Hercules Bobinson, and in the late A.J.C. Derby ran second to the celebrated Chrysolite colt, whom he pushed very hard. He is, however, a very uncertain goer, and on this account was looked upon with suspicion until the last few days. " Drnid," in the Lyttelton Times of Saturday last, dilates as follows upon the morning gallops of the principal horses engaged I'. at . the forthooming event : —• Yesterday was a damp morning, and the various ,trainers their gallops, and away home: The first, as usual, ■to open the ball was Guy Fawkes, who did a .good gallop, three times round on the plough, Tara accompanying him twice, and Lady of the Lake going the last round with him. Guy did his work in fine form, and gave his companions all they could do to keep pace with him. Indeed, Tara was fairly outpaced by the old horse the second time round; when Lady of the Lake joined in Tara was eased off, and went her third round alone, both Guy and Tara after the:r flutter going to their stables to be scraped. Puriri, Maroro, and Songster went once round on the outside turf, at a very fair pace Maroro leading nearly the whole of the distance. Cloth of-Gold and the Lady Florence colt went once round on the outride turf, and the pace was pretty hot throughout, the Cloth doing as he liked with the three-year-old. Next to come" aloDg were Tasso and Wrangler, and they aUo did their two mile spin. Wranglor went in fine style all through his gallop, and it is a question whether he won't win the Derby yet. The Fanny Fisher colt went a good gallop once round on the plough, and impressed many with his fine going. Ariel, Dead Heat, and Ngaro did the same spin as the other atables, the five-year-old leading all the way, Dead Heat going kinder thau usual and pulliog double at Stewart Waddell all the way. Bob Ray did but little with his lot—Danebury and Lady Lea did a canter once round, going very slow all the way ; Fallacy also did a short canter alone, and Tadmor was stripped, and, with Wattie up, was sent along a regular duster once round. m Childington, Zetland, and the Moose, did slow work, the two former going together, the latter by himself. THE BETTINO MARKET. The following iB the latest betting:— Derby. 3 to 1 agst. Danebury aa 1 Dead Heat 4 — 1 Puriri 0 — 1 Fanny Fisher Colt and Wrangler. C J.O.
