THE GOLDFIELDS.

[from our own correspondent.]

Owharoa (OHiNEirrjßi), Tuesday. Smile of Fortune.—Stoping on the No. 1 reef will be started this week. The drive on the No. 2 reef is being pushed ahead, and shews a fine body of stone over two feet wide, and gives fine prospects. The drive to intersect the No. 1 is in a distance of 50 feet, and it is expected the reef will be cut in about 10 feet more driving. The manager is laying down tramways in all the. drives, and getting the mine well opened up, so that when the mill starts there will be every chance of keeping it at work.

The Annie has all the cuttings finished for the tramway from the mine to the battery, and all the timber is on the ground to finish the tramway. This portion of the work will be finished by the end of the week, when a start will be made to break down stone.

The amalgamation between the Radical and Golden. Hill has been completed, and a start will be made to put in a main tunnel through the company's mine, for the purpose of intersecting at a deeper level several reefs cut on the surface out of which fair prospects have been obtained.

The Nut.—Shareholders are busily engaged in putting in a drive. They have Borne distance yet to drive to get their reef. The Bella.—The drive is in 150 feet. The contractors have still 50 feet to go to finish their contract.

Morning Light.—The drive on the No. 3 is still being pushed od, but no stone is being broken out, as the manager thinks it advisable to only have one handling of quartz, thus saving both time and money in working the mine. All the timber will be at once delivered for the bridge and the tram by the end of the present week. The bridge will be finished in about fourteen days, and all connrction with the battery complete. Any amount of stone is ready for t'ie mill, which is expected to make a start about the middle of November. On the whole, I think the prospects of the Owharoa look better the more the mines are opened up ; and if the battery should start by tho time expected, I think there will be a decent escort by Christmas.

Some parties have started sluicing in the Rotokubu, and from what I hear of their prospects, they will make wages.
