DEPUTATION FROM THE THAMES.

During the last few days a deputation from the Thames, consisting of his Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. E. Macdonald), Captain • Richards, and Messrs. Howe aud Hicks, i have been in town for the purpose of com- 1 pleting the arrangement for the development of the low levels of the Thames goldfields, -j as approved by a public meeting at the ( Thames. It was necessary, in order to give. ] effect to the proposed scheme, that the con- \ sent of the Government should be obtained . to divert the balance of the £50,000 loan to \ the Pumping .Association from further sink- 1 ing to driving. Some delay was caused by the absence of the Colonial Secretary (the Hon. Dr. Pollen). Yesterday the deputation again waited upon His Honor the Superintendent, ] and after consultation with him, went di- ( rectly to the office of the Colonial Secretary, \ and had an interview with him. From the j latter gentleman, they obtained the opinion 1 that the matter was one entirely between « the Pumping Association and the Superin- j tendeut of the province. They then returned j to the Superintendent, and informed him of , the answer they had received from Dr. j Pollen. His Honor stated that this being j the case, there would be no difficulty in the t way of carrying out the project they had in j hand. He requested them to make their g application in writing, and said that if he , obtained from the General Government a \ statement similar to the one they had spoken s of, there would be no objection to granting g the authority required, to divert the expenditure of the balance of the loan from sinking \ to driving, in order to thoroughly prospect < the ground. \
