The motion was as follows:—" That it is highly r desirable that five or six inch water mains be „ laid from the Franklin-street junction along Ponsonby JRoad to Hepburn-street." The charges for water used for ; domestic purposes had been fixed by Act, but t it remained for the committee to decide upon ; the rates to be charged for water supplied » to manufactories, to the shipping, and at the • stand pipes. > The scale of charges and the regulations affecting them are as follow : —'* Charges for water in the streets, and where mains are laid." The rate for water used for domestic , purposes, is as follows :—The owner or occu- ! pier of any house or tenement of the annual | value of £12 10s and under, shall be the t sum of 10s per annum; above £12 10s, and not exceeding £100, the annual sum of 7 per . centum on the amount of valuation; above ' £100, and not exceeding £200, 6 per centum , on the amount of valuatfon; above £200 and not exceeding £300, 5 per centum; . above £300, 4 per percentum, on the ' amount of valuation. Warehouses and stores not being domiciles, 2£ per . centum. Buildings within 100 ~ yards | of any pipe, and to which water is laid L one half the rate liable if water were laid on, And if such owner or occupier shall use by meter, he shall pay per thousand j gallons, 45.; but in no case shall the yearly , payment be less than the amount abovementioned for the rate on the valuations, and it shall be optional with the Council to require any person using the water for domestic purposes to fix a meter to check excessive consumption, or waste. The valuations made by the City Council will be adopted, except in the cases of properties not previously valued, which 'will be assessed, by the officers of the Council. Manufactories, and other large consumers under this heading, shall consume by meter, and shall be charged 2s. per thousand gallons, but the Conncil shall reserve to itself the right of deciding what shall be classed as manufactories. Government departments, and markets, shall consume by meter, and shall be charged, per thousand gallons, > 3s. For water delivered at stand-pipes :—For load not exceeding 250 gallons, Is; and per L bucket, Id; shipping per 1000 gallons, 2s. l The water rates of premises supplied under valuation shall be paid half-yearly, in advance ; and the consumers by meter shall be monthly, according to the scale of charges. The meters (when required), the internal fittings, and the necessary labour in fixing ( the same, shall be provided by the person > requiring the water, and the work must be i done under the supervision of the engineer of the waterworks, and subject to specificai tions which shall be supplied by him. The City Council may supply any persons with water for domestic purposes, and for other than domestic purposes, at such rates and upon such terms and subject to such conditions as the City Council and the person requiring such supply may agree upon." Those regulations were adopted, by the Committee and will be brought before the next meeting of the City Council for confirmation.
