Manala .arrived yesterday at Napier from . Auckland. She has been purchased for £2700 from Messrs. Holmes Bro3. for the coast trade. The ship Brodick Castle hauled alongside the wharf yesterday, to discharge her London cargo. Tho ship . Merwanjee Framjee is already discharging alongside. H.M.S. Clio has been handed over to the Murine &Wtety in London, {p be as a trying-ship, instead of the Warspite, which wa3 burnt in January large ship is reported to have passed the Bay of Islands yesterday morning, bound to the southward. We expect this will be H.M.S. Pearl, Commodore Hoskins. _ The brigantine Sea Rip. which arrived on Tuesday ' evening, after a smart passage of 12 days from . Sydney, will haul alongside the wharf this morning to discharge cargo. . ■ The barquentine Southern Cross, belonging to the Melanesian Mission, was brought up harbour and alongside the wharf yesterday. Her crew have been ihipped, and she will leave on Saturday for the IsWe' copy the following from an English paper:— "The New Zealand Shipping Company, many of whose vessels have sailed from tho West with passengers and emigrants, has made wonderfully lapid ■trides during its comparatively short existence. During the past year they despatched from this Country no less than 54 ships, having a tonnage of 49,329, and they carried, in addition to full cargoes. C 922 passengors. Several vessels have been launched for the company during the year, and the indefntlg- • able Marine Superinteunent, Captain Ashby, is just now in Jarrow, for the purpose of receiving ever from ' Messrs Palmer, the builders, another and the last of five new ships, the Wairoa." The schooner Blanche arrived late on Tuesday - night fromßoratonga. with a cargo of island produce, after a three months' cruise among the Hervey Group. • Moderate weather was experienced on the passage out. Captain Young reports having left Rarotonga on March 12, and had strong south-east winds till in neighbourhood of French Rock, which was on the 18th; since then had a continued series of south-west and southerly gales, alternated with calms, and winding up with a very heavy blow from the south-east on tha 26th. On the 23rd sighted a barque, a whaler, standing tho same way as ourselves. Had a very heavy storm in Rarotonga about the end of February. Tho Venus, of Tahiti, was in harbour at the time, and parted her moorings. She was secured again, however, without much damage, having knocked off a piece of false keel and some copper. Too much praise cannot be accorded to the Rev. Jas. Chalmers, the missionary there. No sooner did he hear of the vessel's distress than ho levied a large number of natives, and, accompanied by the Queen's husband, went to her assistance, himself up to his neck in the surf, encouraging, directing, hauling, getting out and ropes to secure her again. They were over three hours in the water. Had it not been for his efficient services, the vessel would, in all probability, have been seriously injured, if not totally lost. The Coronet, which left Auckland for Tahiti and Rarotonga, had not arrived at the latter port when the Blanche left.
