FOOTBALL.

Cricket is on the wane. One, perhaps two matches more will iu all probability close the season. The "kickists" will then come to the fore. Football meetings are on the tapis, and the relative clubs' strengths freely discussed. Cricket would have been almost a dead letter bntforthe " Southern Trip Cup" matches. A trophy—not as a memento of the "kiekists" Southern trip—should be inaugurated for football, and a subscription commenced among the clubs. Not that there has ever been any lack of spirit shewn in this game, but some victorious emblem would tend to instil a greater interest, and make the excitement more intense and the emulation more keen. It is said the North Shore Club is defunct (aud a great pity too), for some of last season's best matches were when the representatives of the red and white stripes wore in the field. It is truly to be hoped they will strive their best to keep the club together, and honors will doubtless crown their exertions. The Auckland Club is said to be very strong, having been augmented from the bone and sinew of the North Shore. Parnell will be no mean opponents, with its new members : the yellow and black stripes will take lots of shouldering, tussles, and hard' scrimmages to be "put through." Ponsonby and Graf ton clubs will make themselves better known, it is believed, this season. So in all probability, especially if a Southern team comes up, which is not unlikely, a glorious and even a briliant season will be the result. Committees should meet early and uiscnss the scene of future exploits, arrange matches, and decide if points are to be scored or otherwise.
