A MISTAKE.
To the Editor of the Herald,
Sin, —Being so well known, it is often my lu clc to be asked to "Jnstseeif this accountis o o1 "rect?" or, "Just write a few lines for me to n yoldpeople ?" or, "Iwant toputafew words in thex>aper; just do it for me, and I'll sign it,'. 1 &c, &c. Now, please set mo right. The other day, on going home (for I live sixteen miles beyond .Lucas's Creek), an unsophisticated friend asked me the latter question. In my usual willing way, without hesitation, I put into shape exactly what my friend dictated, and of course left same for him to sign. It seems lie forgot to do so, and as my writing was known to you, although not signed, the letter was made to emanate from me. The latter part of Mr. Stevenson's letter I have not the slightest reoHeetion of. I am known to pay my way. As to writing, as long as I can say a useful word in any way to rally, cheer, and—
Help on my partners hi distress. My comrades in tills wildernew, I am afraid I shall be, sir, yours truly, A. TjVkmrt.t.
"Wainui, February 28, 1876. [The letter came to the office without signature, but, knowing Mr. FenneU'a handwriting, we put the signature which he usually attaches to his communicatione.— Ed. N.Z.H.J
