The weather is terrifically hot. [press agency.] Napier, Thursday. There was much more excitement at the election than at any other previous election. The result of the poll was :—Napier 1 McLean, 213; Russell, 147; C'olenso, 33; Stuart, 151; and Ferard, 13. Tlio total result of the polling in town and country gives : McLean, 330 ; raissell, 269 ; Stuart, 173 ; Colenso, 3S; and Ferard, 13 votes. Messrs. McLean and Russell were elected. Wellington-, Thursday. Three of the men so murderously assaulted at the Hutt still linger on, but Beedle and Paul cannot survive much longer. Their brains are oozing out, and their feet are cold and are turning black. Young, who was cut in the neck, stands some slight chance of recovery. The cable between Penang and Madras is still interrupted. The route via Siberia is open, and the minimum charge to London is £13 10s 6d for 20 words. Steamers continue to run between Penang and India, and Singapore and India, by which means messages are forwarded. The p.s. Luna is almost certain to start to pick up the Couk's Straits Cable on Friday afternoon. About three miles of spare cable have been taken on board the Luna, and anew donkey engine fixed for winding purposes. TnrAp.u, Thursday. The Hon. E. W. Stafford was elected for Timaru without opposition. He made only a few remarks promising a full addresa on Friday next. He stated he was strongly in favour of a Timaru breakvrater on Sir John Coote's plan.
