CITY EAST ELECTION.

To the Editor of the Herald. Ser, —Will you kindly permit me, through your columns, to contradict certain electioneering statements made during the course of tlie last few days iu relation to City East. I can only instance a few, and from these the electors may judge of others. It lias been circulated pretty widely—not by Mr. Clark, I believe, but some o£ his clever supporters and members of committee —that, amongst other gentlemen who have deserted me and are going for Mr. Clark, are Mr. Dignan, Mr. S waiisou, and Mr. Daniel Goldie. Sir, this is not true, and those gentlemen will state so if necessary. Then it is said that I am going to retire from the contest, and stand for Eden, or at any rate allow myself to be placed in nomination for Eden, because I fear defeat in City East. This also is absolutely untrue. Ido not fear defeat in City East, no.- am I going to allow myself to be placed iu nomination for Eden. If I be so nominated it will be against my consent, and another electioneering dodge o£ the very clever supporters of Mr. Clark, who may well say, " Save me from my friends." These statements, and others like them, may be considered useful, but they arc the reverse. I entirely acquit Mr. Clark of making them, but I am glad to say that my committee and my supporters have made none such in relation to my opponent, whom I yet hope to hail as a valued colleague in the Assembly.—l am, &c., W. L. Rees. Auckland East Educational District, Dec. 2S, 1875. W. L. Eees, Esq., Auckland. Sib, —I have the honor to submit, on behalf of the Auckland East School Committee, the following questions to you as a candidate for the suffrages of the electors of this district, and to solicit your replies thereto in order that they may be inserted in the Cross and Herald of Thursday morning, the 30th instant.—l am, &c., D. K. CI.ARKSON", Secretary Auckland East School Committee.

Will you, in view of tlie great difficulty which, exists to secure a. site for a common, school in the City East, take steps, in the event of your being elected, to enable the Improvement Commissioners to set apart, as a public school reserve, a portion of the land under their control ? Will you, if necessary, introduce a bill ill the House of -Representatives to give effect to that purpose ? Auckland, December 29, 1875. Mr. D. K. Clarkson, Secretary, Auckland East School Committee. Sir, —I have the greatest pleasure in answering the questions proposed to me in your letter of yesterday. 1 shall, if elected, esteem it my duty to do the utmost to obtain a si e and endowment for public education in I've City East, and I shall feel a great plea.,are in forwarding the views of the committee, not only in this matter, but in all others of a like kind. Indeed I seek to enter public life in order that I may be of use.—l am, &c., W. L. Rees. Auckland, 29th December, 1575. Mr. D. K. Clarksor., Secretary Auckland East School Committee. Dear Slr, —In'reply to your favour of yesterday's date I have pleasure in stating i:hat 1 am desirous of doing anything in my power to further education. As regards your special request, a portion of the property vested in the Auckland Improvement Commissioners is reserved for the public, I believe I can see my way as a Commissioner to support a measure giving authority to the Commissioners to set apart a portion of that reserve for the purpose named, and think that a suitable site can be found between "Wellesley-street East and Barrackstreet, near the new Drill-shed.—l am, fee., J. M. Clap.K.
