J [PRESS AGE.VCY.J _ _ Wellington, Wednesday. _ The principal topic of conversation in town is the attempted murder ease. T'xe nrisoner is a native of Switzerland—a man oi* & most repulsive appearance. He seems quite cowed, and. appears to know tliat lie is almost ccrtain to be executed, even if his victim lives. He is about the middle size, apparently about forty years old. There does not appear to have been any motive for the crime. The wounded men, as they lie in the hospital at present, have a most distressing appearance. They have neither wires nor families. The prisoner was taken to the hospital yesterdays and identified. On leaving the Court and hospital he was greeted with howls by the crowd, and would probably have suffered if not protected by the police. The case was remanded till Monday. It is understood that Burns, for Rosslyn, and Lumsden, for Invercargill, are against abolition and the Government generally. Mr. Murray Aynsley is understood to be a purely local man, who is put in on account of his views on the education question solely, not on account of general politics at all. Her it, Wednesday. The el ection resulted as follows : —Lower Hutt: Fitzherbert, 117; Hutchison, 9. Taita: Fitzherbert, 17 ; Hutchison, 14. Upper Hutt: Fitzherbert, 35; Hutchisot, 5. The following resulted :—Murray Ansley, 139; Webb, late member, 107. Timaru, Wednesday. The Geraldine election resulted :—Wakefield, 102; Hayhurst, 102; Wilson, 44. The returning officer voted for Mr. "Wakefield, and declared him duly elected. There was intense excitement at the poll. Port Chalmers, Tuesday. The nomination for the General Assembly took place on the 27th instant. About 300 persons were present. The Hon. W. H. Reynolds and Mr. James Green were nominated, and, having addresssed the electors, the show of hands was taken. The Returning Officer declared the show of hand s ? to be—Mr. Green, 42 ; and Mr. Reynolds, 40. A poll was demanded by Mr. Reynolds. Wednesday. The Port Chalmers election is creating much excitement. The Hon. Mr. Reynolds' friends are rallying round him and a strong committee is at work. He is sure of a majority at the Port. Mr. Green has no committee at the Port, and depends principally upon outside districts. At present the candidates' chances are about equal. Dunedxj.-, Wednesday. At the Dunstan election Pyke polled 300 ; Baird, 159. At Roslyn, Burns, 233 ; Grant, 46. Invercargill, M onday. The result of the poll for the election of a member to represent this place in the General Assembly is as follows :—Lumsden, ISO; Cuthbertson, 150.
