Tho Argus of the 30LU October says:—ln the import markets sale-, to a considerable extent have been reported, notwithstanding that an appearance of inactivity and want of animation has been the prevailing aspect throughout the day. ■Breadstuff's are firm, and sales of flour are making at £13 5s to £13 7s 6d. AVhc:.t is wanted, and for prime •northern 6s 7d to Cs 8d can be got, but there is still •little offering. In the absence of supplied of fine, 'other and inferior descriptions are coming into notice. We learn of the quittance of 700 bags of Tasmanian corst wheat at 5s 9d to 6s 10d. Oats are not active. We hear, however, that business is pending, though no sales can yet bn reported. Quotations, according to quality, range from 3s 4d to 33 9(1. ASaize is rather better; an improved enquiry is experienced, and 4a Sd to 4s 9d is demanded. Sugars are quiet, and no special business has reached us. Under the hammer, 300 ba-;s in faulty condition were quitted at £25 6s to £30 lCs. The Andaman, which has just arrived from Port Louis, has brought the first of the new sugars. The samples itre on view to-day, and the assortment appears most suitable for trade purposes. The shipment will be scld on an early day. The advices to hand by this vessel reach to 30th September, and though we have dates by telegram to 14th October, yet the '.following details Will be found of some' interest. From private communications we learn .'that sugar was in active demand during the month for the colonial market, and 10 vessels had been loaded, including four.for New Zealand. The advices regarding candles have -imparted a further impetus to that market, 4900 boxes altogether having changed hands in. parcels ranging from 10C0 to 16P0 boxes in a ,line. Brandon's, De Houbaix's, !&c, have been amongst the parcels disposed of. Kerosene.oil continues to obtain notice. We hear of 2000 c-ises Devoe's having been placed at Is 4d, and for a parcel of SOO cases diamond Is 3d wa3 realisid. We lea-n that the balance of the Stratheden's shipment of Columbia Biver salmon, in cask, to the extent of 1600 packages, has changed hands on private terms. A very fall price is stated to have been paid, but the quality is very superior. We are informed that're-' I sales to a considerable extent have also been made at ;a satisfactory advance. In teas we note sales of fine to extra fine congous at Is lid to 2s sd. In liquids we note a brisk demand for Hennessy's case brandy, and sales have been made at 30s to 30s Cd on the wharf.

The second sale of wool this season was held at the stores of Messrs. Hastings, Cuningham and Co., this afternoon, and it attracted a very full attendance of persons • tvho. are interested in the staple. Killing rates shewed a decline of from Id to 2d per lb. upon prices current at corresponding period last year, but at these reductions there was an evident desire to do business on the part of the buyers, and the sale passed off with great Bpirit, the withdrawals from the catalogue being confined to some of the larger lots. Xn all about 2000 bales were disposed of, greasy fetching from 9d to 13d per lb., which was obtained for a Murrumbidgee clip ; scoured, from 20d to 22dper lb.; fleece, 19d to 28d per lb., for the clip of Mr. A. Wilson, of Mount Emu, in the 'Western District.

Clough and Co., Melbourne, report. —"/Wool: Tho opening sale of the season, which has been looked forward to with a large amount of interest, has been held to-dny; . the attendance of buyers was very large, and good competition existed, the various lots sold realising very satisfactory prices, clearly shewing that notwithstanding the heavy.decline which has taken plice in the London, market, the buyers are prepared to pay such prices here as render shipping upon growers' acccunt very speculative in the present aspr.ct of the hoire markets. The sales at our warehouses will commence next week. Sheepskins: "We have held our -usual sales, and have disposed of a large supply at about last week's rates, viz.: Common butcher's green skins, 4s to 6s 6d; and extra, 7s each; common superior skins, dry skins, 2s to 6s 0d each; and station skins in bales, 5d to 8d per pouid. "Hides: The market continues Arm, and supplies not large. Wo have sold green at 23s to 355; cow, 16s to 23s each; Victorian (wet salted), to 6d; New Zealand, sjd to s}d; and calf-sl-'ns, 5d to 6d per pound. Tallow: The market has still further advanced during the week,"and the quantity offering does net meet requirements. Our sa?es have been, for inferior, £27 to £30; mixed, £31 to £37; mutton, £38 to £40; beef, £33 to £37 per ton. Leather: "We held our usual sale on Tuesday; the attendance was large, and we notice a better demand for dressed leather than there has been for some weeks past, and will no doubt improve. We sold, crop, IOJd to 12d; kip, Is 6d to Is lOd; runners, 2s 4d; calf, 2s to 3s 9d; wa.Uaby, 2s to 3s Id; waxed kangaroo, 23 to 2s 3d; harness, 13d to per lb; and-basils, 4s to 20a per dozen. Kangaroo skins we have sold at 6d to 13d per pound, according to size and quality. "Bark: "We have to report a decline in the price of this article, more particularly for ground, which is now only worth £7 per ton, bags charged; chopped, £6; and bundles, £5 per ton."
