CITY COUNCIL.

The Council met yesterday afternoon at the usual hour. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Messrs. Daldy, Holdship, Buchanan, Von der Heyde, Cosgrave, and Isaacs. Correspondence.— A letter was read from Mr. Owen, requesting permission to construct an oven underneath the footpath on his premises.—Mr. Anderson stated that such applications had been granted elsewhere, but he did not think that the neighbourhood was so crowded as to render it necessary to construct an oven of the.kind referred to.— Councillor Isaacs thought that as no harm could be done by it, the Council should not in any way attempt to limit private enterprise.—Leave was granted, with a reservation that such permission should Dot be allowed to interfere with any future improvement projects of the Council. —A letter from Mr. Dickson, on behalf of the inhabitants of Hobson-street, protesting against the use of scozia ash for foofpaths, and offering to pay half the expense of laying them down in asphalt.—-After some deb'te, the matter was allowed ,to stand over. - - ■ :

Street Tjumwats.—A communication from Mr. John A. Kussell,-the County Clerk of San Francisco, was laid on the table, and Councillor Holdship proposed a vote qf__ thanks to that gentleman. He had evidently taken a great deal of trouble in the matter, tis he had not only furnished the Council jwith valuable data respecting the operation pf street-tramways'in Son Franciaco, bVfcjalso had procured, similar statementg'frotn other towns in America.—The vote of thanks was seconded' by Councillor Isaacs, and carried unanimously.' ' Improvement Commission.—A letter from Mr, E. H. Stevenson, on behalf of the Improvement Commissioners, was read,permission to erect ■wdbden with roofs, on some allotments the property of tnV Commissioners at the head of Princes", street. City Stage Carriages.—A regulation providing that the hours at which city stage carriages should be entered upon the licences, was proposed by the Mayor, and carried." Tenders.—Two fendefs for the improvement of Pitt and Hobson-streets were opened. That of Mr. A. L. Wilson, for £1914, was accepted. Some discussion took place as to the footpaths, and it was agreed to follow Mr. Anderson's recommendation, ito form the paths first with scoria ash, and asphalt them next spring. .Waterworks, —In reply to a question. ;from-Councillor "Von der Heyde, the Mayorsaid reports of the progress of the waterworks were sent in monthly. The cousider- ; ation of the special rates was postponed. I Debentures.—The Mayor announced that ■ the Council's debentures had been' taken up at 95 per cent. In answer to a question ho said ■he would inform any individnal Councillor who had taken them, but i-5 was not wished to make the name public. Council Meetings.—On the motion of ; Councillor Isaacs the future hour of meeting was altered to half-past two. Tramway.—The consideration of the information furnished by the County Clerk of Sau Francisco on the above question was referred to the StreetajCommittee. Survey.— Qα the motion Of the Mayor it was decided that the 'Water Sub-commi-tteo. bo authorised to spend the amount necessary for the survey of the city property at Western Springs. .
