COURT OF PETTY SESSIONS.
TCI-sday. TBeforo R. Graham 'Chairman), P. A. Philips, A. K. Taylor, Major Tlsilall, and J. L. Tole, Ksqs., Justices.] Drunkenness. — One person forfeited bail for this offence. Vaorascv. —Edward Bryan was proved, upon the evidence of the police, to bo an idle person, without lawful means of support, and was sentenced to thirty d:\ys' imprisonment with hard labour. City By-laws.—Hugh Hughes was summoned for riding furiously in Queen-street. The defendant failed to appear, and the case was remanded until Wednesday morning.— Peter Dawl, for allowing the chimney of his house to take fire, was hned 5s and costs.— William Jennings was charged with allowing one cow to wander in Nelson-street. The defendant pleaded guilty, and having been convicted for similar offences eight times previously, was fined 15s and costs. Licensing Act. — Phillip Hackett was charged with a breach of the above Act by failing to keep a light burning over the principal door, of his licensed house, the Market Hotel, from sunset on the 17th to sunrise on the 18th inst. The defendant pleaded guilty, arid said that the light mnst have gone out by accident at about 3a. in. Sergt.-Major Pardy said that che night had been very stormy, and that probably the light was accidentally extinguished. The Bench inflicted a nominal fine of Is and costs.
Lunacy.—A man named Joshua Stocks was, upon the evidence of Drs. Stockwell and Young, committed to the Provincial Lunatic Asylum as being of unsound mind. Protection Order.—An application was made by Elizabeth Costcllo for a protection order against her husband. The deposition made by the applicant was to the effect that her husband failed to contribute towards her Bupport, such failure not being caused by sicknoss or other unavoidable cause. She prayed the Court to protect her earnings and property,.to give her exclusive charge of her four children, and to order her husband to contribute towards th<jdr maintenance." The Bench granted the applicant a protection order and the exclusive custody of her four children, the order to date from the Ist of January last. An order was also made upon the husband to contributo at the rate of 2s oa. per week for each of the children ; the las order ,to date the 24th inst.
