THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE.
Tun following cablegram, received b}- the Sydney (Jovcroment, has been transmitted, per Hero, to the New Zealand Government : —" Lundon, June 25. The mail contract has Ixjen eigued. The contractors are tlio American Pacific Company and John Edder. of Glasgow, and Macgregor, of I.eith, jointly and severally. The service* t<> he under the printed conditions sent you. Term, eight years ; each colony paying half; speed, 11 knots ; subsidy, £59,b5". The service begins in November next, from Sydney nnd JVrt Chalmers, and continues once every four weeks. lioats for 'Frisco sail from Port Chalmers, and the boats from 'Frisco through to Sydney, connecting at Fiji. Tho boat from Sydney to Fiji meets tho boat from 'Frisco, and carries the mail* to the New Zealand ports; this boat then being the next through boat from Port Chalmers to 'Frisco, returning thencu to Sydney, and ho on. Edder t ippiies two new ships, anil the American Company three new ships, all upwards of 2SOO tons, and of iron. No doubt of ability of contractors. The contract forwarded by out-going mail requires confirmation of tho present session of Parliament. Send to the New Zealand Government a copy of printed conditions, bend, and contract, and this telegram. Cable agreement signed by Vogel and Cowper. It awaits the Seal of tho Colony to complete it.—Cowi-ku and Russell." —— i
