GUM.
To the Editor of the KeeAid. Sis, —I cannot allow a letter signed as above to go unchallenged. X have most carefully enquired into the matter, and I fir&d that the prices paid iu January for average gum were £10, £20, £17, £15 ; February, £16, 11/, £16 10s: March, £16, £16 10s; April, *16, £17, £16 10b ; May, £H5, £17, £18, the latter price paid yesterday. 1 have furthermore been informed by the consignees of gum ihat they have not exceeded these prices in their sales. It is true soino choice parcels have sold higher, but, in a market report, it would only mislead the up-country storekeepers and gurato give other quotations than for the bulk of the gum brought to market. If l" e f' e are purchasers at £23 per ton, 1 have no doubt that their agents can obtain any quantity up country for delivery forward ; but to risk the market at such a quotation I believe would be unadvisable. Quotations for qualities can bo given in the London market because it is delivered there, sifted, sorted, and picked, but certainly not liere.—l am, &c., CoiniEEciAi. Repobtbr. May 22, 1873.
