A FEW SUGGESTIONS ON THE COMING CRISIS.
To the Editor of the IIEEALD. Shi,—May I offer one or two suggestions should war unhappily brea ! ; out ? 1. Suspend all aclive operations against the enemy till the spring. The natives put. in their crop of potatoes in August and following months. If a movement o;i:i then be made which would materially interfere with the planting of potatoes, corn, &e. ; it would have a great effect on the native mind. Maoris have a great regard for their stomachs, and one of the first considerations of the enemy will be to tide over the spring, so u- ; to secure the planting of his crops. Prevent, this, and they will soon be brought to reason. 2. Occupy Kawhia at once. As a native told me to-day, "only a minute" from the heart, of Ihe King country. The Ngatinwhutft tribe, Tawhiao'a people, occupy the southern ami eastern shores of that fine harbour. It has long been a tabooed place. Remove the tapu at onee, by sending an armed veseel. A vessel aiicnored oIF one of the settlements, wou'd bo ft bitter nut for the Ngatimalmta to crack. 3. Employ the Wanganuis to enter the King's country, from the South, via upper Wangauui. 4. March the Arawas and Tiuranga Kupapas from the north and past, to meet a force, via Piako, from the Thames. Boldly enter Tawhiaos territory, occupy Tokatioamutu, leaving pas as only traps for the unwary, and we sha.l soon see the beginning of the end. Every native I have conversed with eajs, we have rioht on our side this time. The King party, thev say, is alone responsible for the murders of "Whiteley, end family, Todd, Lyon, and Sullivan, and it is a puzzle to them why the ruthless and savage butchery of those unoffending pc.-aons romuixis so loug unaveugod.—l uuij A New Zealandeb.
