AUCKLAND ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS.—PRESENTATION TO CORPORAL GEDDES.

Last evening the first of the Company's balls was held in the Odd Fellons' Hall, Cookstreet. The occasion was taken to do honor to a very commendiiblo act of gallantry by a member of the corpe (Corporal G-eddes), who eured the life of a ludy that had fallen from Tararu whavf. It was expected that Colonel Gordon, Major Tisdall, and Colouel Harington would attend, but unforeseen circumstances prevented these officers beinz present. Dancing commenced shortly after nine o'clock, and was sustained spiritedly till 12 o'clock, when aupper wa3 provided, Mr. Hatswell (Sergeant) being caterer.—Lieutenant Kenny occupied the chair. The U3iial loyal and patriotic toasts were given, viz., " Ecr Majesty the Queen," " The Governor and the Colonial Government, " The Army and Navy and the Colonial Forces." When the cloth was removed Lieutenant Powley Galled Corporal Geddes "to the front," and presented him, amid cheers, in the name of the company, with a massive gold ring, which had been subscribed for by the members of the company as a recognition of the gallant act already alluded to. Corporal Geddes replied in a suitable speech. The usual toasts were given—" The Ladies" and " The Press ;" the dance was resumed and kept up to the small hours of the morning.
