CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

Tub annual meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce was held yeslerdajafernoon, at the office of the Chamber, Queen-street. Present: Captain Daldy (in the chair), and Messrs. W. Grahanie, P. A. Philips, I'. Jlacf'irliine, Dargaville, S. Cochrane, Harrison, Heather.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The annual report of the Chamber was then read. It was simoly a syrn psis of the work done by the Chamber duriug the past year.

A letter was read from Dr. Featherston on the subject of the proposed Colonial Association in London, and staling that he would have much pleasure in acting on behalf of New Zealand.

A letter was read from the Chamber of Commerce in Melbourne, staling that that body was of opinion that it would not at present be advisable to form a s-'cond association in Esgland to represent the coionies.

Mr. DARGiTiLLE moved the adoption of the report.—Agreed to.

The balance sheet was then read : — It showed that tile receipts were : —Provincial G-nvernraent refund, £57; subscriptions, £G'J ISs. ; balance from last year, £2S Is. Bd.; balance in hand, £1 Bs. 9.1.; total, £147 Bs. sd. The total expenditure during the past year had been £147 Bs. sd. The fiuancial statement was adopted. The election of officers was next proceeded with. Some discussion look place on the subject of the nonattendance of committee last year. Some of the speakers remarked that the apathy shown by this committee was worse than in the case of the .Mechanics' Institute. (Laughter.) The following office-bearers were then elected : —Mr. Von der Heyde, chairman ; Mr. Daldy, vice-chainu.iu aud treasurer. Committee :— Messrs. Heather, W. Graiiame, J. M. Slieri, J. 11. Clark, Dargavilh-, T. N. Tinne, and L. A. Nathan. Messrs. G-. W. Owen and D. B. Cruiekshank were appointed auditors for the ensuing year. The ordinary business of the meeting was then proceeded with. Dr. Featherston's letter was first considered. It was resolved to acknowledge the same, with thanks, and to enclose a copy of the letter of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce.

The letter of the .Melbourne Chamber of Commerce was next read. It stated that Mr. Dalgettv wis opposed fur the present to the formation of a new association", but that the idea, although not carried out for a time, ehould not be abandoned.

Mr. Daugayille thought it would be injudicious to attempt to form a second association. They would never be able to form such an influential and us-ful one as that of the Wool Merchants Association in London. He that the letter be acknowledged ; that the Auckland Chamber approved of the suggestion of Mr. J lalgetty, and that it should take action in the matter.

The Chairman was then instructed to write to the Colonial Wool Association in London, stating that the Auckland Chamber had adopted Mr. Dalgetty'a suggestion on the subject of communicating with the association on ali matters of commercial importance.

A letter was read from the Dunediu Chamber of Commerce, stating that in the opinion of that chamber it was not thought likely that the different provinces would agree in the appointment of a eiugle representative for New Zealand.

Some correspondence was read from the Fijian Government stating that by-laws, &c., on the subject of port charges, harbour dues, &c , and Government gazettes, would be forwarded to the Auckland Chamber. Also a

letter stating that a Chamber of Commerce had been formed in Fiji. A letter was read from the Harbour Board; stating that the pro-sent room used by tho Chamber was required by the Board. The matter was remitted to tho committee, to mako provision for the accommodation of the Chamber.

The report of the sub-committee was read, recommending that the subject of Customs drawbacks be kept in view with a view to their amendment.

It was resolved to publish and circulate tho report, of t hn Chamber.

This was all the business, and the meetin; adjourned.
