had taken nothing since leaving Sydney. The Eliza was cruising oil' Norfolk Island; taken nothing since last report. The Both Shan, a fitio ship, i:i command of our old friend Captain Peek, formerly of the Mary Shepherd, arrived iu harbour on 20th August. She is Irom Nelson, where she has just discharged a largo cargo from Loudon, in splendid condition. The ship Alerandrina left the harbor on 14th August for London, with a large cargo, consisting of gum, flax, cotton, &c., valued at about £40,000, and upwards of 19,000 ozs. of gold. Passengers : —Messrs. John Skeltou, A. Bully, E. W. Gurncy, W. Parker, F. Sundland. The ship Joshua Bates, Captain Lydserf, arrived in harbour on Ist Sept., from Hongkong;, with 260 Chinese. She left Hongkong on the Ist Jur.c, with 263 on board, anil during the passage a number of them were ee : zed with scurvy. There were three deaths on board. The Joshua Bates experienced very heavy weather during the past week, and has put into port in a leaky condition. The Joshau Bates has n quantity of cargo on board for Melbourne. Messrs. Henderson and Macfariane are agents for the vessel.

The Robert, a largo American barque, in command of Captain "William Lanfare, arrived in harbour on the 19th August, leaky. This vessel left Baker's Island, with a full cargo of guano, on the SLh July, bouud for Cork, for orders, leaving there loading the barque Kate Covert, to follow in eight days, with a cargo for the same port. Shortly after leaving Captain Lanfare discovered that the barque was leaking, and immediately set the pumps to work. On the 11th July the starboard pump broke down, and the other had to be kept constantly going to reduce tlio water. On the 27th July, when in latitude 23 deg., S., longitude 178 deg. 42 min. E., the vessel was making about 22 inches water per hour, and subsequently, during a stiff breeze, increased to 33 inches. It was then decided to come on to Auckland for repairs. On the 7th August the Robert called at Norfolk Island, where the pump was taken ashore and partially repaired. On the night of the 10th August, during a strong S.W. breeze and a very heavy sea, the barque had to slip 45 fathoms of chain and an anchor and put to eea, in order Ito save her from going ashore. Capt. Lanfare then stood away for Auckland, and experienced ! moderate weather across. The Cavalier Islands were made on the 17th August, and since then head winds have prevailed. The German barque Elizabeth, from Honolulu, called at- Baker's Island for orders, and proceeded on to Allen's Island. Since her arrival in port the Robert has discharged a large portion of her guano in order to.ascertain where the vessel was leaking, but although more than half her cargo has been removed, the leak continues, and after a survey made yesterday, it was decided that the whole of the cargo must be landed before the vessel can be repaired. As on her previous voyage to this port, the Alice lias arrived a perfect model of clean- | liness, and has accomplished the passage in 95 j days from the time of taking her final departure from the Channel. Captain Windemer, a gentleman who, during his previous visit here, gained the confidence and esteem of all connected with shipping matters, is still in command, and m learn from the passengers that throughout the passage ho has exhibited his usual kindness, and for which they desire to return their thanks. The passage from the Channel to the Cape was somewhat protracted by light winds and heavy gales, the hitter detaining her for five days. The Cape being passed on the 61st day out. Thence, however, she has done some spiendid work, occupying only thirty-four dayß to the 'three Kings. The passengers have arrived in good health, no sickness having occurred since leaving the docks.

By the arrival of the Agnes from Tairua, ire have received news of the drowning of one of the seamen of the ketch Eagle. Captain Loverock reports leaving Tairua with a cargo of 20,000 feet timber, but in consequence of a heavy gale from S.W. had to take shelter afc the Great Barrier until 3 p.m., Monday. The ketch Eagle, from Auckland, bound for tho Bay of Islands, also ran into the Great Barrier lor shelter. The master of that vessel reported that during the gale one of his men, named George Russell, had been washed overboard. The heavy sea did not warrant the crew of the ketch lowering a boat. Some ropes and spars were thrown out to the drowning man, but were of no avail.
