It appears that an old man named Haniiigan, between (It) aud 70 vears of I called at the house of a Mr. 11." M. Dennet, t a painter, living near Cox's Creek, on Sunday evening, about live o'clock, and'solicited sonic * bread and tobuceo. i» well known \ to the police, having been several times coir.- ' milled to the stockade as a h.-jjgnr, or what, is more commonly termed iti this city n " vagrant." lie was supplied with hoth bread nnd i tobacco, and left shortly after dark to go on his way. A short time" afterwards Mr. Bennet heard loud cries of" Save me ; oh God ! r save me ! help ! help'" In company with a Mr. , Robert Kidley, who was slaying at the house i at the time, Mr. Bonnet proceeded a'oll2 I the banks of the creek, but all was silent, and , after a long search the two men returned to r the house, without seeing anything. Thev resumed the search, however, about G o'clock „ yesterday morning, when they discovered tho body of the old man buried nearly breast-deep ' in the mud, and quite dead. At high tide the water must have bee:i fully four feet aloie his head, so drowning him without a possibility of escape. They at once removed the . body to a shed close by, and Mr. llidley came into town nnd Rave information to the police. , Constables Carrigan and Harnett, of tho nnter police, immediately proceeded to the creek in [ their boat, ami brought the body to town and deposited it. at the dead-house, Official Bay, I where it now awaits a coroner'H inqnc.'L which . will take pl.eo at 2 o'clock to-day,at. the Hail- ; way Terminus Hotel, before Or. I'hilson.
