THE TELEGRAPH TO THE THAMES.
We are glad to see that the contractors for the new telegraph lines between here and the Thames—Messrs. MeNeill and McKenzie—are taking advantage of the : present favourable weather, and are pushing on the works vigorously. On the section between Auckland and Mercer the 'poles are erected as far as the Uazorback Hill towards - Auckland. On the section between Mercer and Pukorokoro the line is marked out the whole distance, and tbe holes are dug for several miles. The new line between Auckland and Waikato will be carried down through Eden Terrace and Mechanics' Bay, and on through Parnell to -Newmarket, and will follow the course of the old line generally to Mercer, at which station a junction will be effected with the Thames line. The line south of Mercer will follow the course of the Great South Road to Ngaruawahia. 'There appears to be some difficulty in crossing from Pukerokora to Shortland, the natives being strongly opposed to the erection of the telegraph over their lands. It is to be hoped that the Native Minister, Mr. McLean will be able to overcome their opposition, and that we may soon be enabled to congratulate our Thames friends on the completion of this important undertaking, We believe that Messrs. MclYeill and MeKenzie are also the contractors for the southern portion of the line.
