PUBLIC MEETING AT THE THAMES.
A meeting to consider the leasing of claims question was held on Saturday at the Thames. Messrs. Rowley, Donkin, James Boyd, Birt, Sutherland, Darvy, Alexander, and Dr. Merrett took part in the proceedings. The sneakers condemned the leasing of claims to capitalists. We have not space for the report of the meeting in to-day's issue, but will publish it to-mor-row, together with an able letter which appeared in the same issue of the Advertiser touching upon this matter. The earthquake felt in Auckland yesterday morning, at 12 - 10, was felt at Shortland, only much much more severely than in Auckland. At Shortland it lasted for 2J, minutes, and wae accompanied by a tidal wave.
