WEST MAITLAND. A fire broke out on the 14th at Lamb's public house, Louth Park. The stables, containing a large quantity of .hay, were burnt to the ground. The neighbouring houses were saved. BOMB ALA. A meeting was held on the 12th of the Bombala Crushing Company, Mr. Kesterton in the chair. Most of the shares were taken up. A had lambing season is anticipated. TTRALLA. Thunderbolt iobbed a Chinaman, who is a shepherd at Bundarra, of £50 on the 9th ult. MELBOURNE. The Ballarat Rangers beat the East Melbourne Artillery, in a rifle contest, by four points. Pour men have been arrested at Ballarat for murdering a man named Michael Roach, with whom they had been drinking. The Commissioners for Education owe £4000 for interest which accrued durign the deadlock.
Mr. McCulloeh has received a memorandum from Fiji, dated July 22, stating that Thakaombau repudiates the agreement made with the representatives of the Fiji Company. The representatives of the company explain, however, that the consul alluded to a former charter. The Corporation intend buyiug 32 feet of ground in Collins-street, adjoining the- Townhall, for which they will pay £110 per ft I. Richard Goodhind, a hop dealer, ha been committed for trial for fraud. Returns just tabled show that his Exeei.ency Sir J. AT. Sutton demanded half pay from the date of his leaving England ; nnd that General Carey meanwhile drew the whole salary as Acting-Gronernor, but has since returned onehalf. ' The Civil servants have not been paid their salaries for the last two months in consequence of delay in passing the Appropriation Act.
ADELAIDE. At the meeting of the Hamley Gun Club, on Saturday, Mr. A. McLeod won the silver cup given by the Governor, killing every bird. The result of the first crushing of five tons from the Almanda silver mines gives 112 ounces of retorted silver.
The Assemply have summoned Mr. Tobin, a squatter, for having threatened to horsewhip Mr. Longmore, the member for Kipon «nd Hampden.
The new from Jupitereek Diggings continues favourable, and tlie number diggers is daily increasing. It is reported that General Cliuto is coming here to inspect the troops. The Stratlialbyn and Middleton Railway is cxpected to be opened in December. BRISBANE. The blacks are reported very troublesome about Bowcn ; they killed several racehorses closotothe town. 300 tons of stone are offered for the first crushing machine at the Cape diggings.
