TRIAL TRIP OF THE JANE.

The fine new twin-screw eteamer Jane, rccen tl launched from the yards of Mr. Thomae Thwa ite Smales' Point, made her officie] trial trip yesterday afternoon, under the superintendence of Mr. James Stewart, Government Inspector of steamboats. Mr. Ooppell, engineer of the Colonial Government p.s. Sturt, Mr. Coutte. engineer, of the N.Z.S.N Go's, s. Taranaki, and a number of other gentlemen, were also on board. We have already entered into full particulars of the dimensioLS of and need only add that since her launoh she has received several trifling alterations and additions which wero necessary to n.ake her complete. Her cabin, which is capable of accommodating a large number of persons, has beon beuutifully fitted up and varnished throughout. The Jane having taken in a supply of Newcastle coale, left the Queen-streei wharf at two o'clock, and steamed down tho harbour, in company with the Tauranga. When abreaet of the coil hulk, both veseels put on full power and steamed in company as iar aa the North Head, the Tauranga gradually drawing ahoed. i'Jie Junu, howevor, behaved remasks bly v?e)!, auu did her utmost, io keep up with tho Tauranga, but as the latter vessel is justly pronounced tho fastest steamer of her size in the colonios, it could ecarcely have been expected that the Jane would be able to steam with her, on her trial trip, when everything connected with the veseel is now. The Jano then turned her head towards Auckland and attuined a speed of eight knots for a distance of two miles, with 461bs, preesure of steum, and her engines making 130 revolutiouß per minute. It is the genoral opinion, however, that her epeed will be increased to 8J or 9 knots with 501bs. steam. The Jano has a uplendid pair of engines, which have been prepared by Messrs. Vickery and Co., and the easy manner in which her machinery worked is highly creditable to that establishment. We understand that tho Jane will be employed in tho Thames trade, for which olaco she will leave as soon as a few additions have been made. Thn trial trip yesteiday was quito a .suceeee, and gave the utmost satisfaction to all on hoard.
