Mr. Fox, it will be seen, Las met with an.« enthusiastic reception from the Tarahini and Kangatikei settlers, in which district his estate is situated. A seat will be vacated for him in the General Assembly, and we may loot in the next session of the General Assembly for a leader around which will rally an opposition that will make itself felt upon the ministerial benches. JT , The trial of the native Ima, for the murder • of one John Daniel Boby at Taranaki, has resulted in a verdict of manslaughter. Ihenative had been taken in custody for robbery, and placed in the room of an ann for safety, with Koby over him as a guard. Eoby had a loaded gun. Inia, it seems, took the gun from his guard and shot him with it. According to the prisoner's statement, his captor had repeatedly threatened to shoot prisoner, and fearing that he intended to do so, he, the native, had wrested the gun from Eoby, and i ; iled him in self-defence. The excuse would not have held good in the case of a European, but being a native a verdict of manslaughter or!y was returned.
