MANGAPAI.
(FROII OUtt OVTN COR&ESrOXDKfT.) On Tuesday, the 14th of January, a meeting of the electors of Mang'ipai, was held ut the residence of Mr. T. P. Hewlett, for the purpose of forming a Eoad Board. After Mr. Hewlett had read the public notification in the Gizcite, bringing tlio " Highway Act" into operation in the district of fllan?apai; and «l?o a letter from hia Honor the Superintendent, appointing Mr. Hewlett as Chairman of the meeting. The following gentlemen were elected as Trustees, viz : Messrs. E. Carter, W. Ormiatoo, J. O'Aieara, R. Knagga, and D. Wilson. Mr. xt. Ks AGG3 then proposed (hat a rate be levied by the acre, observing that it was the fairest way of doing so, and pointed out the absurdity of taxing any one for the improvements he had made. Mr. Osmi3toK seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr. Knagos being requoeteu to propose a rate, said that ho should propo-o a rate of one penny per acre for tho first year, that those at present settled in Mangapai were not so badly off for roads as several other districts, less favourably situated ; and he thought it would not be wise to overtax ourselves ut the present time, when money was not over-plentiful amongst us. This opinion app?aring to meet the views of the meeting, the motion was seconded and carried, no other amount being proposed. A vote of thanks was piven to Mr. Hewlett, for hia gentlemanly and courteous manner as Chairman, also for the use of his house for the occasion. One elector said, " that although nearly all of us have been staunch supporters of Mr. J. Williamson, he has done next ti nothing fer us at Slangapai." 'Xhis statement (which w;;s quite correct) contradicts the many-insinuations made some time ago, that Mr. ;W-.generally fn-oured b-is supporters. If we ever get any aid through Mr. W., we wish to get it because we are fairly entitled to it, as a share of the revenue eqaitably distributed through tho Province, and not because we have supported this or that individual. -
