AUCKLAND DISPENSARY.

The annual general meeting of the subscribers to the Auckland Dispensary was held in the committee-room of the Mechanics' Institute yesterday, at 4 p.m. His Honor the Superintendent occupied the chair, and the following gentlemen were present: —Messrs. J. Batger, W. Kattray, W. Ewen, D. Caley, C. Canning, J. Buchanan, (Secretary), and Wiseman Thj hon. Secretary (Mr. J. Buchanan) read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were confirmed. Ke also read the annual report and medical officer's report, as follows:— " I*E?ORT OF TUB COMMITTEE POB THE YEAB ENDING 31sr December, 1867. "At the termination of another year your Committee have the honor to present their annual report on the operations of the Institution. " From the report of the Medical officer it will be seen that the number of patients has again increased, thus showing the urgent necessity which exists for the maintenance of the dispensary in due efficiency. "Your Committee regret, however, to have' to state the finances of the Institution, as shown by the subjoined statement of the Honorary Treasurer, are far from being in a satisfactory condition ; as, although the preeent year was commenced with a lalance of nei-ly thirty pounds on hand, yet its con-

clu.-ion shows that the income has not been sufficient to meet the expenditure. «' Your Committoo fear that unless some steps he taken to relieve the present embarrassed state of its finances there will remain no alternative but to close the dispensary, and, feeling that such a step would be attended by a great increase of distress among the already severely depressed and suffering poor, they would fain hope that tuch a necessity will bo in some way obviated. " Whilst again according their thanks 'to Dr. Kenderdino for his continued assiduity in tho discharge of his onerous duties, your Committee very much regret they have been unable to increase bis salary in accordance with the resolution of the last general meeting of the subscribers. " At the end of the September quarter, Mr. Wellsman, the compounder of tho linjdicineß, again complained that, in consequence of the very large increase in the number of prescriptions, tho remuneration he received did not suffieo to protect him from lobs, an increase, therefore, pro. tern., of £5 per quartor was made to his salary. " In conclusion, your Committee truet that, aitor the ten years of acknowledged usefulness of tho Auckland Dispensary, tho liberality of the community will stili enable them to continue, by its means, their labors to alleviate sickness and suffering among those who are totally unable to procuro requisite and proper medical attendance and advico for themselves. " John Buchanan, " Hon. Sec."
