STEAM TO THE WADE.
Otis readers are aware that Captain Casey recently made a trial trip to the Wade, but abandoned the idea, at present, of running a steamer between that place and Auckland; as premature, and ofuncertain profit, whenashehad then reason to believe, only a divided support would be given to the undertaking. Since then, a numerously signed petition pledging him the support of the district, has been forwarded to Captain Casey, which together with the reply, will be found below. . To Captain Cabby, Proprietar of the s. ' Gemini.' Sir, —We the undersigned re.iident settlers in the "Wade, Wninui, Dairy Flaf, and Pukeatua, do herebytender to you our united and cordial support in your spirited endeavour to establish steam communication from Auckland to the Wade, and we pledge ourselves to our utmost to secure to you the entire trade of the river. We would suggest thtt two irip3 every alternate week w-uld for the present answer our requirements. Yours obediently, (Here follow 6S signatures). Wade, January 16, 1868. Dear iiajor Stoney,—l have just received yours of the 16th instant, and signed by 67 settlers of the Wade, promising me support in the event of my establishing ateam communication between Auckland and the Wade. I feel that I am too insignificant a persrn to receive such an influential paper. Had it been addressed to His Honor the Superintendent, asking for d subsidy, the result might have been very satisfactory. At present I have only one steamer, and until I alter my mind very considerably, I shall keep her in the trade she created for herself—namely, to Riverhead sr.d back daily—firmly believing that, notwithstanding the inducement to run to the goldfields, cultivating and settling the country will eventually gain the day. Meanwhile don't lelax your exertions in improving the navigation of the river ; let the stones be blasted and taken quite out of the creek ; it will then be your most valuable highway, and must ultimately be the means of enriching your district. I may havo another steamer ready in April next, and if your waters are not taken up before then, it is Tf-ry likely I will give the place a fair trial; but would not give yon any promise at a time when new city has sprung up in six months. Yours very truly, J. Casey. Auckland, January 18, ISGS.
