THE CITY EAST ELECTION.

To the Editor of the HkbaijT). Sis, —Aβ some days must necessarily elapse beforo . the election for the City Kaat can take place, would ' it not be as well if the candidates and electors met for the purpose of coming to Home definite understanding with each other. We have too loag been in the habit of electing partisans, irrespective of any ' real fitness they may possess for legislation ; or else ' of allowing gentlemen to come forward and ask for bur vote?, and ■whoreiilly go into the Council or Assembly as representatives of (heir own not of our opinions. The electors are alone to blame for this. They should ineist on having from every candidate a distinct and unmiatakeable expression of opinion on ' every important political question coming within the sphere of their member's interference. No mete general sketchy speeches should satisfy them, but a plain downright answer to a plain question. The man who either cannot or will not give an explicit expression of his views has no claim ou the suffrages of the electpr .—Tours, &c, Auckland, January'2o. Bbfokm.
