NOETHERN DIVISION ELECTION, The polling for the return of a member to setve in tlie General Assembly for tlie Northern Division, takes place to-day. Mr. Tliomas Macfarlane and Major Cootiei are the only two candidates in the field. The friends of Mr. Macfarlane both, in town and country will, we trust, rally at the polling places and put him in by such a majority that it may be seen what are their views in regard to the qualification they deem it necessary' that theii? member should possess. Mr. Macfarlane liasi a largo stake in the Division, as_ also in tha Province at large, and moreover in the whole list of our Auckland members there is not yet one to be found who can fairly be said to represent commercial interests in the House of Representatives. Of Major Cooper, we can only say that his return to the House of Assembly would be a very great and serious mistake, and that such an accident would materially weaken thc status of the Auckland members generally in the. eyes of the Southern representatives.
