GENERAL SUMMARY.

London, Apeil 26. The Australian February mails were delivered in London on the 12th and 18th April. The Queen continues in good health, Tho Princess of Wales is slowly recovering from her severe attack of rheumatism. Tho Princess Christian has given birth to a son. Mr. Gladstone's amendment on tho Keform Bill was rejected by a majority of 22. He immediately resigned the leadership of the Liberals, and withdrew all further amendments. Parliament has adjourned for the Easter Recess. The prosecution against Mr. Eyre, late Governor of Jamaica, was signally defeated, but fresh action has been taken. The grand jury have also ignored the bill of indictment against Colonel Nelson and Lieutenant Brand. The Duke of Edinburgh, in command of H.M.S. Galatea, will shortly leave Gibraltar in that vessel for Australia. The grand annual review of Yolunteers took place at Dover on Kaster Monday. New seams of coal have been discovered in Cheshire. A great Eeform demonstration took place in Birmingham. The opening of the Paris Exhibition on April Ist was considered unsuccessful, owing to the building being in an unfinished state ; and the extortion of the hotelkeepers is loudly complained of. The Great Eastern has returned from America, and only brought 64 passengers. The British North American Confederation Bill has received the Eoyal assent. Fifteen hundred engine drivers on the North Eastern Eailway have struck for higher wages. The tailors of London and Paris are now on strike. The Italians, in case of a war between Prussia aud France, would, it is stated, take part with the latter power. Austria has declared for a strict neutrality. Lord Stanley has sent an ultimatum to Spain demanding immediate compensation and apology for tlie seizure of the British ship Tornado. Tlie Spanish Government acceded to the demand, and restored the ship—the Queen is to pay an indemnity to the owners, aud punish the offending officers. The English Mediterranean squadron has therefore been ordered from Cadiz. The Fenian prisoners are indicted for high treason, and 200 of them under the Whitcboy Act. The exodus from Ireland to the United States is still going on, at tlie rate of 1000 per week. The ship Diana White, of Hull, arrived at the Shetland islands, after being blocked up in the icc for seven months. Oniy five out of fiftyfour of the crew were able to walk. The cap-
